CARY, N.C. - Waxahachie’s Colton Cain played first base and right field during Wednesday’s scrimmage.
Cain, who had only one hit in his first four at-bats was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs to lead the Blue Team to a 4-0 win.
The Blue Team got four shutout innings from starter Richie Shaffer (Charlotte, N.C.) and reliever Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) en route to a 4-0 win over the Red Team in Wednesday’s controlled scrimmage at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Wednesday’s scrimmage offered five two-way players a chance to pitch, as well as allowing a few pitchers a chance to play in the field during a five-inning game.
The Blue Team took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. First baseman Colton Cain (Waxahachie, Texas) doubled down the left field line to start the frame. Third baseman Jo Jo Maldonado (River Forest, Ill.) then sent an RBI-double down the left field line for the first run of the ballgame.
Second baseman Justin Charles (Galt, Calif.) lined a one-out single through the right side to start the top of the third. After moving to second on a groundout by shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif.), Charles scored on an RBI-single through the left side by Shaffer, giving the Blue Team a 2-0 advantage.
The Blue Team added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 4-0 ballgame. After Vincej reached on a two-out error, Fontana singled through the right side to give the Blue Team runners at first and second. Vincej and Fontana would both move up a base on a wild pitch and Cain capped the scoring with a two-run ground-rule double to center.
Shaffer picked up the win after holding the Red Team to one hit in two scoreless frames with two strikeouts and Fontana earned the save, working two shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Red Team starter Matt Davidson (Yucaipa, Calif.) fanned three batters and allowed only one run on two hits in two innings. Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) held the Blue Team to one run on two hits in two innings of relief with two strikeouts and Nick Franklin (Longwood, Fla.) struck out two batters in one inning of work.
Cain led the Blue Team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a pair of RBI and a run scored. Maldonado finished 1-for-1 with an RBI-double, Shaffer was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Fontana went 1-for-1 with a run scored, Charles was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Vincej scored a run in the win.
Ty Forney (Gilbert, Ariz.) paced the Red Team on the afternoon, going 1-for-2 with a double, while Maddox went 1-for-1 and shortstop Eric Brady (Cary, N.C.) was 1-for-2.
Game three of the Youth National Team Trials will be Thursday at 6:35 p.m., while game four will be Friday at 6:05 p.m.
The Youth National Team Trials currently has 36 players competing for 18 roster spots to be announced on Friday, August 10.
Following the announcement of the squad, Team USA will remain in Cary for four days of training before departing for Barquisimeto, Venezuela to compete in the IBAF World Youth Championships August 17-26.
