CORSICANA – On a windy Friday afternoon the Waxahachie varsity tennis team took part in the Mertz Tennis Tournament hosted by Corsicana High School.
“This was a great tournament for our players. They all got to play four tough matches, which is a lot of tennis to fit into one day. With the flu that has been going around, all of them weren’t feeling their best, but most of them still won at least half of their matches.”
Waxahachie’s girls’ doubles team of Hannah Bush and Danielle Calhoun placed fourth in the girl’s A doubles. In the first round they defeated Midlothian 8-6. In the second round the ladies defeated Wills Point (6-2, 4-6, 16-14).
Also in girls’ doubles, Waxahachie Devin Morgan and Gable Brady defeated Sherman (8-2) and claimed 11th place in the B doubles tournament.
Justin Miller finished eighth in boys’ singles. His most notable performance was an 8-1 win against Malakoff in the opening round. Cole Brown finished 13th in boys’ singles with an 8-6 victory against Ennis as his most notable performance.
In girls’ singles, Haley Nutt finished 11th while Isabel Cadena placed 13th. Nutt defeated Forney (8-3) while Cadena defeated Midlothian (8-6).
In mixed doubles, Matt Scheurmann and Bri Jarvis earned 13th place in B doubles. They defeated Corsicana (8-4) in the tournament.
