With the thoughts of injured teammate Tori Bingham on their mind the Waxahachie Lady Indians opened the 2011-12 school year with volleyball tryouts Monday.

Bingham, a senior, is one of several returning varsity players for the Lady Indians. She was injured Thursday in a rollover on the I-35 service road.

Teammates wore T-shirts in support of Bingham as she fights to recover from injuries sustained after being ejected from the vehicle.

Tryouts continue today before head coach Sandy Faussett-Stoops has to decide what players belong on what team heading into the season opener Monday against Midlothian.

Area football teams also started the 2011 season Monday as Red Oak led the pack of schools who did not participate in spring drills so they could get a one-week jump on conditioning.

Conditioning will be key this summer as the record heat will take its toll on players no matter what time of day workouts are held.

Waxahachie Advantage, a six-man team, had one player taken to the hospital after succumbing to the heat as practices opened Monday.
