Next week’s state track meet will have several area athletes competing from the 4A and 2A level.

Red Oak and Maypearl are the only area schools that will have multiple athletes competing, but Italy, Palmer and Midlothian will also have representatives in Austin.

Maypearl, led by senior J.J. Coleman will be well-represented with three individuals and a relay team.

Coleman heads into the state meet with high expectations after winning the 100m dash and 200m dash at last week’s Class 2A Region II meet.

Coleman won the 100m easily with a time of 10.78. The 200m race was closer, but Coleman still won with a time of 21.80.

The senior was also on the 4x100m relay team that took first place with a time of 43.21.

Coleman was joined by teammates Darrell Ashlock, Taylor Beck and Curtis Wishart.

The Maypearl girls will also be represented by Shadoh Deal, who finished second in the 3200m run with a time of 12:13.41.

From Red Oak, Michael Carter and Corwin Pace will be in the field events. Carter won the shot put last week with a distance of 57’-6.5” while Pace finished second in the discus.

Midlothian freshman Austyn Rapp will be competing in the pole vault after placing second last the regional meet last week.

Palmer’s Jeremy Gauna is headed to Austin to compete in the high jump after finishing second at least week’s regional meet with a jump of 6-04.

Italy will also have a representative in Austin as Alex Barajas finished second in the triple jump last week with a jump of 35-09.

The state meet begins next Friday and runs through Saturday.
