MAYPEARL — Trimble Technical High School faced Maypearl High School in a battle of UIL 5A and 3A programs Tuesday at MHS Gymnasium as part of season-opening games for both teams.

The (1-0) Lady Bulldogs earned a three-set victory over the Lady Panthers, winning the first set 25-19, the second 25-14 and the third 25-19.

Though Trimble Tech leaped out to early 5-2 advantage, Maypearl rallied with kills from senior setter and outside hitter Katie Gann, sophomore outside hitter Carson Austin and junior outside hitter Peyton Pogue.

The Lady Panthers drew the score first to 9-5 in the early stages of the match and then climbed within earshot near the middle after back-to-back aces and a combination stuff block by junior Steelie Ledbetter and sophomore Katibeth Stanford drew them within six points.

Gann earned four of her nine kills in the first set while Stanford earned one of her five. The Lady Panthers were also aided by six hitting and serving errors by Trimble Tech's offense.

During the second, despite a pair of set-opening errors, Maypearl managed to climb within two points at the match mid-mark. Gann landed another kill and Stanford had a stuff block and kill on back-to-back plays.

Austin added a block during a seven-point swing to make it 20-14 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs.

Maypearl (0-1) lost the third set by the same margin it lost the first, sealing the sweep for Trimble Tech. Gann led the team in kills and hitting percentage (.286), followed by Austin (.267) and senior middle blocker Phylicia Grimes (.267).

Senior Kailyn Wilborn landed two aces and Gann and Pogue each added one. Stanford had six blocks and Pogue (17), Wilborn (13), Ledbetter (12) and Gann (10) all had double-digit dig totals.

Senior setter Kellie Blake had a team-leading 14 assists, followed by Gann with 11.

Head Coach Jordan Rudolf and Trimble Tech finished 19-13 overall and 10-4 in District 7-5A and reached the bi-district round as the No. 3 seed last season.

Maypearl will compete in the three-day Grandview Varsity Tournament on Friday at GVHS Gymnasium. The Lady Panthers lost to Jewett Leon and Franklin High Schools and pulled out victories against Castleberry (3A) and Life Waxahachie (4A) High Schools and North Central Texas Academy (TAPPS 1A) and reached the gold bracket of the tournament.

The two-set win against Castleberry sparked a four-game win streak.
