MAYPEARL — Maypearl's junior varsity Lady Panthers won their season opener at Maypearl High School Gymnasium, defeating Trimble Technical High School in two sets.
With the help of key digs, back-to-back aces by freshman middle blocker Hadlee Gibson as well as three separate rallies, the (1-0) JV Lady Panthers took the first set 29-27.
Maypearl again sprinted out to an early 5-1 lead after sophomore Sol Cabuto's set-starting ace. During the final set of the match, the Lady Panthers scored seven consecutive points to take a 12-5 lead. Those seven points — with the aid of three kills by freshman Nanea Storm — came behind the serve of Megan Price. Cabuto, Gibson and Kim Price also added scoring hits.
Trimble Tech had 12 serving and hitting errors while Maypearl accumulated only six. Those 12 missteps account it for more than 28 percent of the Lady Panthers total points.
The junior varsity and close the match 25–23 after three straight points via aces and kills. Maypearl will face Whitney High School next at5 p.m. Tuesday at WHS Gymnasium, located at 1400 N. Brazos St. in Whitney.
