WAXAHACHIE — Waxahachie ISD announced its new varsity volleyball team Thursday, per confirmation from Head Volleyball Coach Sandy Faussett.

In addition to bringing back veterans like Essence Clerkley, Audrey Nalls, Taylor Stoops and Alli Wells that finished 45-9 overall and claimed a 17-0 undisputed District 10-5A title last year, the team added valuable pieces like Courtney Crownover, Whitney Volentine and Regan Ward through the process of its three-day tryout.

The 2016 Lady Indians also helped Faussett notch her 700th victory.

Volentine, one of the team's five seniors and a 5-foot-5 defensive specialist, is one of the team's four captains. Fellow senior setter Stoops and junior middle blocker and defensive specialist Nalls and Wells are the others.

Crownover, an incoming junior spent time with the varsity team during last season's run to the UIL 5A regional semifinals. Bobbie Janky, Dana Scott and Bridgett Melton will join Faussett on the 2017 staff and Cinnamin Witherspoon will serve as the team's assistant.

The Lady Indians will begin their march toward the UIL 10-5A district schedule when the team competes in the 10 a.m. Saturday scrimmage at Plano High School.
