MILDRED, Texas — While Ellis County battened down its proverbial hatches and sent out a flurry of cancelations, Maypearl High School braved the cold and kept their hot streak alive.
The Lady Panthers notched their fifth district win and kept pace with Grandview High School after beating Mildred High School's Lady Eagles 38-24 Friday at Mildred High School Gymnasium.
The win also came on the heels of Tuesday's 66-20 blowout victory over Rice High School.
The (15-5, 5-0) Lady Panthers used a 19-point, third-quarter surge to win their second consecutive victory and hold its fifth opponent to 20 or fewer points. They were powered by senior Maddie Creech's 10 points and eight points from junior Sheltyn Campbell.
Creech hit two 3-pointers and scored seven of her 10 points during a 12-point Lady Panther fourth quarter and Campbell scored all but one point of Maypearl's total in the first.
Junior Meredith Keasler and freshman Sol Cabuto scored four points each and juniors Phylicia Grimes, Kynlee Herrin and Summer Moon added two apiece.
Maypearl is scheduled to face Rio Vista High School at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at Maypearl High School Gymnasium. The (3-8, 1-4) Lady Eagles lost Friday's matchup to Palmer High School and fell to sixth place in District 17-3A — above winless Mildred and Rice.
A Lady Panther win and a loss by co-district leader Grandview High School, which will play Palmer's Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, would give Maypearl sole possession of first place.
