VENUS, TX – Maypearl High School used a momentous 12-point third quarter to earn their fourth win of the season and first of the Venus High School Varsity Tournament on Thursday at VHS Gymnasium.
The (4-1) Lady Panthers, which beat Castleberry High School (0-6) 41-20, entered the game on a three-game win streak after beating North Texas Academy and Hubbard and Connally High Schools.
While freshman Sol Cabuto (12.3 ppg) and senior Maddie Creech (11.8 ppg) led the team in scoring through the first four games, against Castleberry it was junior Kynlee Herrin and senior Sheltyn Campbell who powered the Lady Panthers to the tournament's second round.
Campbell and Herrin scored nine points each during the contest. The former scored five points during the third quarter —including a late 3-pointer that helped her team nearly score more points in the third quarter than it did during the entire first half.
The Lady Panther defense also held Castleberry leading scorer Ariana Ramos to nine points and the Lady Lions to a nine-point second half total. Castleberry scored only four points in the fourth quarter.
In comparison, six of Maypearl's nine players scored four or more points and four scored during the fourth quarter and helped seal the win.
Creech (6 pts) and junior guard Alyssa Holder (6 pts) combined for 12 of the Lady Panthers' 41 final points each. Cabuto, who sunk both of her fourth-quarter free throws, and junior forward Phylicia Grimes, who nailed a pair of contested jump shots in the final eight minutes, added four points each.
Junior Summer Moon scored both of her points on 2-for-3 shooting from the free throw line.
With their first-round win against Castleberry, the Lady Panthers moved to the second round and were scheduled to face Venus' junior varsity team at 6 p.m. Thursday at VHS Gymnasium after press time.
