GRAND PRAIRIE — One minute and six seconds was all that separated Red Oak High School from sending its varsity Hawks to the regional meet.

The boys, however, were edged out of the No. 3 position by county rival Waxahachie despite posting a collective top-five finishing time of 1:34:11.2 and scoring 100 points — 41 away from Mansfield Summit High School, the district meet's gold-medal winner.

The boys finished fourth behind Mansfield Summit, Midlothian and Waxahachie High Schools and ahead of Mansfield Legacy, Lancaster and Mansfield Timberview High Schools.

Red Oak junior Zach Heimbuch, the No. 7 overall 10-5A finisher, qualified for the regional meet with a time of 17:21.9 and a mile pace of 5:43. In addition to outpacing Waxahachie's Brandon Moore and Kirby Chandler, his time was less than a minute shy of first place finisher Asa Rice, a Mansfield Summit senior distance specialist.

Red Oak's Lady Hawks placed fifth overall and earned a combined top-five time of 1:58:52.2 and a score of 100 with the efforts of Amy Clements, Jasmine Feely, Savannah Delarosa, Nicollette Esparza and Hannah Mathes.

Clements' individual time of 21:57.7 was 8.7 seconds away from beating Mansfield Summit's Yaya Mendoza for the 10th and final regional position and becoming Red Oak's only female qualifier.
