Lighthouse for Learning Fall Classes
The opportunity to learn through the Waxahachie Lighthouse for Learning Community Education Program is available. The classes listed below begin in October. On-line learning is also available. Kids in the Kitchen – Halloween Cupcake Creations Ages 5-12
Students will be creating deliciously cute creatures around a Halloween theme in the Marvin Cooking Room.

Learn to Play the Guitar- Kids Only ages 8-15
For kids only – learn the fundamentals of the guitar including playing chords and reading music. Please bring a quality guitar, guitar picks, spiral notebook and pencil as you learn to play. Your child can develop a skill that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Join Melinda, experienced teacher and musical artist, in her studio. Classes will be taught at Melinda’s Studio of Music 211 D. Ferris Avenue.

Learn to Play the Guitar – Adults Only
Wishing you’d stayed with those music lessons or learned to play when you were young? It’s never too late to learn to strum the guitar to your favorite songs! Join the growing group of adults who have taken up guitar. You will learn basic chords and strumming styles and practical music theory. “Ag 101” – Designed for New or Small Acreage Landowners
Join this experienced instructor as you cover topics: soils and soil fertility, soil testing, pasture management, basic livestock productions and pond management. This class will be taught at the Texas Agri Life Extension Service Office at 701 S. I-35 East.

Tuesdays Oct. 4 – Oct. 25 four classes
Before you start your backyard flock, come learn some tips on how to successfully manage backyard chickens. We’ll discuss city ordinances, neighborhood associations, neighbors as well as housing, predators, sanitation and raising or obtaining laying hens.

Learn how and when to start your own vegetable garden. Includes creating the space, adding all the necessary amendments for our Ellis County’s soil, planting, caring for and finally harvesting your bounty.

Turf Grasses for Ellis County
Do you have questions about your grass and how to care for it year round? Join this class as you cover the following topics: Turf grass selections for Ellis Co., Preparing the soil for planting, Spring and Summer lawn care, Proper watering in dry times, Disease control in lawns, Weed control in lawns. There will be a question and answer session and handouts will be given on each topic.

Have your plants been enjoying the outdoors this summer?
Now is the time to prepare them for the move indoors. This class will cover basics about getting house plants ready for the move.
It will include how and when to repot as well as suggestions for best growth and pest management in the home.

Beginning Drawing – Sight Size Method
Would you like to learn to draw? Join this class and learn using the sight size method. When properly done, sight-size drawing can result in extremely accurate and realistic drawings. Art supplies will be provided first class- purchase from instructor $15-$20 range. You may also purchase on your own: rane of drawing pencils from 2b-6b, a kneaded eraser, a blending stump also referred to as a tortilion and good drawing paper any size.

Stamping Christmas Cards
Get in the Christmas spirit by creating handmade Christmas Cards for those special people on your card list! Participants will make 12 Christmas Cards (3 cards each of four designs) using rubber stamps and embellishments. This class is appropriate for all levels of rubber stampers. Limit 16

Heartsaver CPR and First Aid Training
Students master the necessary skills for the administration of CPR and First Aid skills.
An American Heart Association certification (valid for 2 years) will be given upon course completion. Students learn how to recognize a life threatening emergency, correct procedures for providing basic life support and what to do in the case of choking or airway obstruction.
This course is not designed for healthcare professionals.

This class is perfect for that timid person who just doesn’t think they are “artsy “enough to create a mosaic masterpiece. Learn how to cut and score glass to create various shapes and patterns. You will create your very own mosaic piece. Start thinking of your fall and holiday special projects for you to keep or for gift giving. Class taught at Mosaic Madness 211 S. College Street.

Dutch Oven Cooking
Learn to cook outdoors in a Dutch Oven. Get ready for camping, fishing, hunting season or family gatherings. You will learn how to properly use equipment and prepare a variety of dishes such as cakes, cobblers, biscuits and more.
The novice cook to the expert can benefit from this class.
Please bring a lawn chair. Class will be held at the Ron Appleton Agriscience building at the Waxahachie Ninth Grade Academy.
