Ottis Eugene “Sonny” Murphree passed away Monday, May 21, 2007, at his home in Waco. He was born in Amarillo, Texas, Nov. 6, 1927, to Ottis Clive “Bill” Murphree and Lois Ann Buckingham Murphree.

He wed Elsie Louise Wilkins on Oct. 26, 1946, in Waco.

Sonny was proud of his World War II U.S. Navy Service. He worked for Humble Oil Co. of Waco, owned and operated the Ketch Pen in West with Billy Willis. He had his private pilot’s license and owned and operated Murphree Pump Service in Irving and Waco. He also owned and operated Waco Fence Company, Murphree Tack and Saddle Company of Waco and hauled livestock for Thompson Cattle Co. of Waco.

He showed cutting horses, trained working cow dogs, produced amateur rodeos, bull buck outs, team ropings, owned race horses, racing greyhounds and milk goats.

In Sonny’s own words, "The good Lord never cheated me out of nothing; I’ve had a couple of good horses, a couple of good dogs and one good woman, so what else could a man ask for? It’s been one hell-of-a ride."

He is survived by his bride Elsie of Waco; stepmother, Louise Murphree Witt, also of Waco; sons, Steve and Linda Murphree of Waxahachie, Pat and Brenda Murphree of Bells, Mike and Othel Murphree of Fort Worth and Timothy Murphree of Mexia; grandchildren Tracy Murphree Chandler of Van Alstyne, Michael Chandler of Van Alstyne, Steve and Shelly Murphree of Waxahachie, Tishia and Michael Crump of Denison, Blake and Deborah Murphree of Denison, Pat and Tracy Murphree of Bells, AJ and Shannon Hutton and Steven Hutton of Fort Worth; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Ruth and T.D. Steinke of Waco; aunt Margie Buckingham Wimberley of Walnut Springs; nieces Darlene Steinke of Irving and Mary Pat Allen of China Springs; cousins; and his caregiver, Doris Biggs.

He will be remembered by all that knew him and missed by some.

Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24 at Bellmead Funeral Home in Bellmead.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, at the funeral home with Rev. Jason Bays of Timbercrest Baptist Church officiating. Internment will follow at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Walnut Springs, Texas. Boot, jeans, hats welcome.

Pallbearers will be Bob Anz, J.D. Middleton, Randy Cherry, Jim Fuller, Jeffery Thompson and Martin Andrade. Honorary pallbearers will be Butch Doss, Thomas Chane, Joe Pilant, Forest Reeder, Forest Reeder Jr. and Mike Reeder.

Donations to the American Heart Association in Sonny’s memory would make him proud.
