John Gilbert Fuentes Sr.

Sept. 19, 1927 –

Dec. 27, 2011

John Gilbert Fuentes Sr., 84, of Waxahachie beloved son, cherished husband, loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather joined his wife and Lord in heaven at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at his home with his daughter Cecilia and granddaughter Krystal at his side. He had battled emphysema and congestive heart failure for many years. He was born Sept. 19, 1927, in Spur, Texas, to Guadalupe and Librada Martinez Fuentes. He grew up in Avalon, Texas, where he went to school and called it home. He loved Avalon, the idea of being from a small town knowing where everyone lived. He especially liked riding around the countryside and teaching his children to appreciate their roots. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1953, where he served as a platoon sargent first class and was a drill sergeant at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

Following his discharge he worked at Ennis Business Forms and Larkin as a machine operator.

Shortly thereafter he owned and operated Texaco, Shell and Conoco service stations. After selling his last service station, he and mom bought and operated J&M Beer Store where the whole family worked together. After selling the beer store he had several jobs working for Fitzgerald Construction, Larkin and Loftis Cattle. In 1997, he retired to help his wife take care of their ill daughter, Alice, until her death on Aug. 22, 1998.  He always took his family on summer vacations where he taught his children to fish and appreciate the outdoors. After his retirement he enjoyed playing cards, dominoes and going to the casinos to play the slot machines. After his wife, Mayme, died Oct. 30, 2011, John was very lonely and missed her very much. He said on many occasions he was ready to join her.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mayme; daughter, Alice; and sister, Lupita Martinez.

He is survived by his children: Cynthia of Dallas, Virginia Munoz and husband, Paul, of Bedford, Cecilia of Waxahachie and John Jr. and wife, Mary, of Murphy; grandchildren: Tiffanie Olvera and husband, Juan, of Waxahachie, Krystal Cortez of Waxahachie, John Michael Fuentes  and Natalie Alice Fuentes of Murphy; great-granddaughter, Zoe Elizabeth Olvera of Waxahachie; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.

Services to celebrate John’s life are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home with the Rev. Grady Cashions officiating.

The family will receive friends and family from 6-8 p.m. with Rosary being offered at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011, in the Pat Boze Memorial Chapel of the Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
