Mattie Lou (Hollingsworth) James was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Mertens, Texas, to A.C. and Lucy (Langford) Hollingsworth. She passed away Aug. 23, 2011.

She was preceded in death by her husband Grover, her parents and her brother, Joe.

Mattie Lou graduated from Mertens High School in 1932 and went on to attend Hill Junior College and North Texas State College, where she received a degree in elementary education. She taught school in Smith Bend, Blooming Grove, Bryan and Ferris.

Miss Hollingsworth was teaching in Ferris prior to the outbreak of World War II when she met and fell in love with Grover James. They dated before he joined the service, corresponded while he was overseas and married June 10, 1945, in Bryan, Texas. She and Grover settled in Ferris and were married for 60 wonderful years.

Mrs. James taught in the Ferris ISD for more than 25 years and was an active member of the PTA and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority for many years. During her career as a teacher she had a positive, loving influence on the countless children that crossed her path.

She loved her God and her church, First United Methodist of Ferris, where she taught Sunday school and took an active role in the United Methodist Women, serving as treasure for many years.

Mattie Lou is survived by her sons, Charlie Joe and Tommy and their wives, Laura and Susan; grandchildren, Leslie, Shane, Holly, Michael and Jessica and six great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church, 101 Redbud in Ferris, from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. Funeral services will be held at the church at 4 p.m. Aug. 27 with Gene Ratcliff officiating. Interment will follow at Ferris Memorial Park North.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church memorial fund (P.O. Box 237, Ferris, 75125) or the Hazel Ingram Elementary School Library (P.O. Box 466, Ferris 75125).
