James Robert Coover was born at home on Dec. 3, 1919, in York County, Penns., to Luther Lincoln Coover and Flora Grace Berkheimer Coover. He passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at Pleasant Manor Health and Rehab. Jim received his bachelorís of science degree in forestry from Penn State University. He married Mary Evelyn Hall on Nov. 30, 1942, and together they raised three children. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps 86th† Fighter Bomber Squadron during World War II in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. After the war, he worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service as a soil scientist in Waxahachie, Lubbock and Temple, Texas.† From 1966 to 1970 he served as an irrigation specialist for the United States Agency for International Development in India. He returned to Texas and worked until his retirement for the USDASCS as principal soil correlator for the southeast region. During his retirement he was also an agricultural consultant to the countries of Mexico, Korea, Lesotho and Cameroon. Jim enjoyed being retired and developed many hobbies during his retirement including fishing, birdwatching,† collecting arrowheads, reading and traveling. As a legacy for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren he wrote his life story and a history of his family based on his research and family documents.†
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1995; his parents; brother, Richard; sisters, Hazel Seasholtz and Helen Coover; his son, David Coover and daughter, Paula Bennett. He is survived by his daughter, Eileen Berger; grandchildren, Andrea Love-less, Robert Grygar, Brian Beasley, Travis Coover, Dylan Coover and Danny Jones; and seven great-grandchildren.†
The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home. Graveside service and interment will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Waxahachie City Cemetery with Dr. Ted Brown officiating.
