Harriet Magruder Newgent died Feb. 28, 2011, after a lengthy illness. Harriet was born Nov. 9, 1935, to Eleanor and Edwin H. Magruder Sr. in Jackson, Miss. Harriet was married to Joseph L. Newgent for 45 years and began their life together in New Orleans. Harriet graduated from Southern Methodist University with a master’s degree in music and sang with the Dallas, New Orleans and Houston Opera’s. She taught voice at the University of Southern Louisiana in Lafayette and Xavier University in New Orleans. Joe and Harriet moved to Waxahachie, where she continued her music career by teaching at Southwestern Assembly of God University and later retired. Upon retirement Joe and Harriet moved to Live Oak, Texas, in 2005. Harriet was an active member in the San Antonio Choral Society.

Harriet is survived by her husband, Joseph L. Newgent of Live Oak; a brother, Edwin H. Magruder Jr. of Midland; and nieces, Fran Sherpa, Elaine Magruder, Kay Hawklee and Lisa Brown; nephew, William Magruder; several great nieces and nephews; and many long time students and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 810 Kitty Hawk, Universal City, Texas.
