Don Clemons Edwards Sr. was born Oct. 9, 1935, in Waxahachie. He was the only child of Harvey Edwards Jr. and Mildred Odessa Clemons Edwards. He graduated from Turner High School in 1953, which was the first class to graduate from the new school. Don accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was a member of Greater New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Through the years, he spent his time serving in the choir, the brotherhood, and later in the deacon ministry.
Don departed this life on Thursday, May 19, 2011. Don leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 54 years and 10 months, Florence; three sons: Don Jr. (Toni) of Arlington, Texas, Darron (Michelle) of Kansas City, Mo., DeJuan (Ranesia) of Houston; two daughters: Cynthia Edwards Green of Waxahachie and Dedra Edwards Williams (Jimmie Zachery) of Dallas. The Edwards seed is blessed with 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Don has one living aunt, Mrs. Winnie Stringer of Los Angeles, Calif. Don was also blessed with three paternal first cousins: Willard Sweat and Delores Jefferson of Los Angeles, Calif. and Jewel Crenshaw of Waxahachie, who loved him as a “little brother.” Don was also blessed with 24 maternal first cousins who loved him as a “big brother” and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other cousins and many friends.
A viewing will be held from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Community Funeral Home. A wake will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Greater New Mount Zion Baptist Church. Funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26, at the Waxahachie Bible Church, 621 N. Grand.
