Ellis County-based Department of Public Safety troopers arrested two women Saturday on money laundering charges after recovering more than $43,000 in cash from their vehicle.

Trooper Lee Coronado made a routine traffic stop, with the paperwork identifying Dulce Flores Casteneda, 28, as the driver, according to an arrest affidavit, which lists Sonia Vielma Flores, 51, and two children as passengers in the vehicle.

The affidavit notes that after being given “implausible stories” by the two women, Coronado requested and received consent to search the vehicle, which also was alerted to by a drug canine. The money was located during the search, the affidavit reads.

“Officials later learned that the two children encountered in the vehicle had been borrowed from other family members in an effort to facilitate the defendants’ criminal activities,” Coronado wrote in his affidavit.

The two women were booked into Wayne McCollum Detention Center on a third-degree felony charge of money laundering, more than $20,000.

Bond for each was set at $20,000, according to jail records.
