“Sunset on the Serengeti” was the theme of the 2009 Montae Reagor Excellence Gala in honor of the Waxahachie ISD teachers and support staff of the year.

The welcome and introduction were given by school superintendent Tom Collins and WISD director of public relations Nicole Mansell, who introduced Reagor at the event, held Thursday evening at the Waxahachie Civic Center.

“This is just my way of saying thanks for all the hard work (educators) do and for seeing to it that your students achieve all they can achieve,” Reagor said.

After the singing of the “Lord’s Prayer” by Victoria Bell, followed by dinner, Collins presented June Flowers, who works with special education at Waxahachie High School with the Heart of a Warrior Award.

Deputy superintendent David Truitt introduced the Teachers of the Year, Rookies of the Year and Campus Support Staff of the Year.

The primary Teacher of the Year Award went to Felty Elementary fourth-grade language arts teacher, Gayle McVey; Kathy Helms, language arts teacher for Finley Seventh Grade Center was awarded Secondary Teacher of the Year; Caroline Weiershausen was named Rookie of the Year; and Kris Rencher was awarded Support Staff of the Year.

Excellence gala gift sponsors included Bell Insurance Agency, Citizens National Bank of Texas, the city of Waxahachie, the Education Foundation for Waxahachie ISD, J&S Office Supply, One Fine Day Salon, Southwest Securities, Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, Waxahachie Junior Service League, Waxahachie Symphony Association and Wiley’s Jewelry.

The event was hosted by Reagor, Laveeda Bell, Victoria Bell and the Reagor family.
