Walk For Hope, a Susan G. Komen-sanctioned fund-raising event aimed at raising money to find a cure for breast cancer will take place Nov. 10 at Getzendaner Park in Waxahachie.
Participants will have the choice of a 2-, 4-, 8- or 10-mile walk and can enjoy a car show, food booths, face painting and other family-oriented activities throughout the day.
Organizers said they are planning the event as a way to give support and encouragement to Fran Seay, the lead associate over accounting at the Waxahachie Wal-Mart and a 29-year employee with the company. Seay was recently diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.
Seay resides in Italy with her husband, David, who works at Chaparral Steel and is a local farmer. They have three children and four grandchildren. Seay is hospitalized and recovering from a sickness relating to her cancer treatment.
“When you work day in and day out with the same people for years, you get to know them. You see their kids grow up and you see their grandchildren born,” said Lisa Bustos, assistant store manager. “When something like this happens, it’s devastating.”
The walk will be very similar to the Walk For a Cure that takes place in Dallas every year.
“It started out small,” said Linda Chamberland, claims associate and community involvement coordinator for the store. “Our associates here wanted to walk in Walk For a Cure in Dallas in support of Fran, but we just couldn’t coordinate it around everyone’s work schedule. That’s when we decided to have our own event here in Waxahachie.”
The committee planning the walk hopes to make Walk For Hope an annual event.
“With all the growth in Waxahachie, there’s no reason why our town can’t lead the state in fund-raising to support breast cancer research,” Bustos said. “I think that there are lots of people in the community that would take part in a walk if there was one here locally.”
Walkers will have the opportunity to pre-register Nov. 7-9 at the Waxahachie Wal-Mart, in the back of the store where the layaway counter used to be. Walkers may also register at the park on the day of the event.
Registration fees are $200 for teams and $25 for individuals and all funds raised will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Corporate sponsorships are available and can be arranged by contacting Bustos or Chamberland at (972) 937-3460. Bustos also can be reached at (972) 743-3044.
Sponsors will have their names on Walk For Hope T-shirts, which will be available for purchase the day of the walk.
