Eta Omega to hold blood drive

Eta Omega Sorority will hold its quarterly Carter Blood Drive from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at 501 N. Hwy 77 next to Burger King.

Donors will be entered to win a pair of VIP tickets to a Texas Rangers home game this season, thanks to our friends at the Texas Rangers and Fox Sports Southwest. They will also receive a buy-one-get-one-free Rangers ticket voucher and T-shirt. 

“At least 1,100 donors are needed a day to meet the need of our area and there is always a shortage during the summer months,” a spokesman said.

Barbecue

fundraiser for BSA Troop 234

Boy Scout Troop 234 will host a barbecue to raise funds for troop supplies and camping during the coming year. They will be serving from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at St. Paul Episcopal Church, 624 Ovilla Road in Waxahachie. Randy’s Bar-B-Que of Red Oak will cater the meals.

Tickets are $10 each and are available by calling Ray Porter at 972-923-2000 and at the door.

The troop will also hold a silent auction during the event to raise funds for troop camping and needed trailer repairs.

Habitat work day Saturday

Volunteers are sought for Ellis County Habitat for Humanity. The organization will need 10 to 15 workers for this Saturday, Aug. 20 to help raise the walls on the house and putting trusses on the garage.

Due to the heat, the workday will be from 7 a.m.-noon.  Instead of lunch, we need a volunteer(s) to bring a light breakfast.  We also need a greeter.

There are safety rules that must be followed at the work site:

1. No open toe shoes, sandals or flip flops.  Closed toe shoes must be worn.

2. No shorts – long pants or jeans must be worn.

3. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old to be at the work site (unless we designate another age limit for a specific work day).

4. Volunteers 16 to 18 years old can do construction tasks but cannot do hazardous tasks such as roofing or operate power tools.

5. No one under 18 years of age can operate power tools or be on the roof.

6. These rules apply regardless of whether or not a minor’s parent is at the work site.

7. There must be one adult for every 5 minors on site.

8. Bring your own gloves if you would like however no power tools can be brought to the work site.

Ellis County Tea Party to host political forum

The Ellis County Tea Party will host a political forum for the incumbents and challengers for the offices of U.S. Representative for Congressional District 6 and Texas Representative for House District 10.

This event, scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 20, will be held at the Waxahachie LaQuinta Inn on Stadium Drive. The purpose of the forum will be to inform and help educate voters of the positions of the candidates and allow the citizenry the opportunity to be part of the interview process.

SAGU cheer camp Aug. 20

Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s Cheer Team will host its annual Pee Wee Cheer Camp from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 20.

The event is open to the public for ages 5-12. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The $25 cost includes a T-shirt, a snack, photo with the SAGU cheerleaders and two tickets to a SAGU football game. The Pee Wee Cheer Camp will cover jumps, cheer and dance. Campers will learn a cheer to perform during a home football game this fall.

Fill the boot

Waxahachie Firefighters Association needs the public’s help to “fill the boot.” Firefighters will be collecting donations from 8 a.m.-noon Aug. 20-21 to help send children with muscular dystrophy to summer camp. Firefighters will work at two intersections: Northgate Drive and U.S. Highway 77 and Indian Drive and U.S. Highway 77. Times may change depending on the weather.

The third day of the campaign will be rescheduled because Waxahachie firefighters are attending the funeral for Dallas firefighter Lt. Todd Krodle on Friday.

Waxahachie Symphony Belles and Beaus parent information meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, 102 YMCA Drive.
