Cinco de Mayo
The Ellis County Hispanic Organization will be hosting a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Singleton Plaza in downtown Waxahachie on May 6-7.
The entertainment is free and open to the public. The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta will begin on Friday night with live music being performed at the Texas Theater on Main Street in downtown. Performances will start at 7 p.m. with DJ Tejano Joe and DJ Big A followed by the Tequila Boyz who will take the stage at 8:30 p.m.
Saturday’s events will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Live music and entertainment will be provided by the Conjunto Outlaws, the Conjunto Prohibido, Animo, Escape, the Hometown Boys and Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico. Also there will be zumba performances and demonstrations done as part of the days events.
The festival will once again feature a hot sauce contest with three different divisions that is open to the public.
These divisions include best tasting, hottest and most creative salsa. Entry forms can be downloaded online. The entry fee for the contest is $10. The fee along with the hot sauce have to be delivered to the check in booth in Singleton Plaza before 11 a.m. There will also be a kids zone and many different vendors. The second annual Maypearl Gospelfest will take place from 3-8 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Lakeview Camp and Conference Center, 5128 Farm-to-Market 66 in Waxahachie.
This year’s event will include performances by The Cross Country Band, The Buddy & Tina Wright Group, Mike Culpepper, The Ranchhands, Baggy Bottom Boys and the Shepherd’s Quartet.
Door prizes will be given away throughout the event and concessions will be available for purchase. Gospelfest-goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and enjoy an evening of live country gospel music.
The event is open to everyone and requested donations are $20 per family or $5 per person, but no one will be turned away.

Evening of Art scholarship
The public is invited to an evening of art in memory of Shelley Nance from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Ellis County Art Museum, 501 W. Main St. in Waxahachie. Proceeds will benefit the Shelley Nance Memorial Art Scholarship Fund.
Family Fun and Fitness Day at Palmer High School
Palmer ISD will host a Family Fun and Fitness Day on May 7 at the Palmer High School Football Stadium. Events will include Palmer Dog Jog 5K and 1-mile walk or run. Following the run there will be a health fair with several fitness demonstrations.
The 5K and one mile walk or run will begin at 8:30 a.m. with health and fitness events following from 9:30-11:30. There will be free immunizations and health screenings, games, prizes and giveaways.

A candidates forum for the city of Ennis will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, May 6, at the Ennis Housing Authority community room, 300 Arnold St.

Support group meets
Family and professional caregiver support group meets from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, May 8, in the class room of Ennis Regional Medical Center. This group is a no-fee group with ties to the Alzheimer’s Association support groups and is hospital affiliated.
