DANVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A prosecutor in eastern Illinois says police were justified when they shot a Texas man to death during a tense standoff along Interstate 74 in April.
Vermilion County State's Attorney Randy Brinegar says 23-year-old Ocuwatofumi Kaiyewu (oh-KOO'-wah-toh-foo-mee ky-YAY'-woo) gripped a machete like a baseball bat and moved toward officers as if he was about to swing just before he was shot on April 6.
Brinegar says the Missouri City, Texas, native also told officers several times to shoot him.
Brinegar says tests found only a small amount of marijuana and caffeine in Kaiyewu's body.
Kaiyewu was shot following a police chase. His family has said police didn't have to shoot him to subdue him.
