HOUSTON (AP) — A 2005 hurricane evacuee from the Beaumont area must serve life in prison without parole over the death of a Pasadena woman who helped him.
Jimmy Hoang Lee on Tuesday pleaded guilty in Houston to capital murder over the October 2005 strangling of 77-year-old Betty Blair during a robbery.
Another storm evacuee, 47-year-old Roosevelt Smith Jr. of Napoleonville, La., was sentenced to death in 2007 for his role in Blair's murder.
Trial is pending for Lee's girlfriend, Stephanie Jacobo. Both were 18 at the time of the killing.
Prosecutors say Blair paid the three to do odd jobs on her property.
The three were arrested driving Blair's car, with some of her stolen belongings still in the vehicle.
Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf coast in August 2005. Rita made landfall the following month.
