McALLEN, Texas (AP) — An official says a convicted killer smuggled a razor blade into a courtroom and slashed the face and throat of a U.S. marshal who is recovering at home after getting stitches.
U.S. marshal's spokesman Dago Lopez tells the McAllen Monitor the incident took place Friday during a probation revocation hearing in federal court for 31-year-old Jose Garcia Garcia Jr.
The defendant pleaded guilty last week to the 2008 murder of his cousin, 33-year-old Sandra Rincon. She was strangled and stabbed 35 times when prosecutors say Garcia was trying to steal money to buy cocaine.
Garcia was on supervised release for a 1999 bank robbery conviction when Rincon was killed.
Lopez says investigators are looking into the security breach.
