SAN ANTONIO (AP) - The Air Force and Army are about to break tradition and combine some operations in San Antonio.

At a ceremony at Randolph Air Force Base on Friday, Brig. Gen. Leonard Patrick will become commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing.

His wing will soon take responsibility for support services like public works, housing and chaplains at all Army and Air Force installations in San Antonio. Historically, the branches have operated separately.

The merger was designed under the 2005 Base Re-alignment and Closure plan and will be completed in 2011.

San Antonio, which calls itself "Military City, USA," will be one of 12 cities worldwide where the Defense Department has joint bases.
