EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ Customs agents seized more than 3,300 pounds of pot found hidden in a shipping container, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said Tuesday.
The drugs, hidden in the false compartment inside an otherwise empty sea shipping container, were found Monday afternoon, Chief CBP Officer Rick Lopez said.
Lopez said the drugs were found after agents working at an international bridge near downtown El Paso X-rayed the truck, which the driver claimed was hauling empty containers.
When the X-ray revealed a hidden compartment agents used a drug-sniffing dog to inspect the truck a second time.
Agents later found 270 large packages of marijuana, weighing about 3,343 pounds. Lopez said the drugs have a street value of just shy of $3 million.
The driver, a Mexican national whose name was not released, was not arrested and returned to Mexico after the incident. The truck's manifest showed that the containers were destined for El Paso.
Lopez said the case is being investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
