A traffic accident July 15 near the Texas Motorplex has left one person dead and another injured.
According to police reports, a southbound 2001 Ford Focus four-door had struck a vehicle that was slowing down to turn into one of the stores in the Reagor Springs area. “The Focus hit that vehicle and apparently was fleeing the scene when the second accident occurred in about the 8100 block of U.S. Highway 287 (West Ennis Avenue),” detective Sgt. Mike Hopson said, saying the accident occurred at about 10:38 p.m. “(The driver) was passing another vehicle and lost control. They went out into a cotton field and rolled at least three times, we believe.”
The vehicle traveled 294 feet after leaving the roadway, Hopson said, noting the deceased was ejected.
“The driver initially told officers he was by himself, which could have been from his being injured,” Hopson said, noting officers searched the area but did not find anyone else.
“The deceased victim’s family knew he had been with the driver, and when they heard of the accident they became concerned,” he said, noting officers returned to the accident scene at about 2 a.m. with family members to conduct another search but again were unsuccessful in finding anyone else at the scene.
“They did not find the deceased until the next day,” Hopson said, noting family members and friends located the deceased about 70 feet from the accident scene after returning to the location again Saturday morning.
The driver of the Focus, Efren Espino, 17, of Ennis was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in critical condition, with his condition upgraded to stable over the weekend, Hopson said.
Justice of the Peace Curtis Polk pronounced Miguel Morales Cardona, 19, of Ennis dead at the scene and ordered the body taken to the Dallas County medical examiner’s office.
Hopson said a preliminary medical examiner’s report received this morning indicates Cardona died immediately from blunt head trauma.
The accident remains under investigation, Hopson said.
