The American Association of Retired Persons tax aide volunteers will be on hand again this year to assist anyone who needs help with preparing and filing his or her income tax return.
The AARP Tax-Aide program is a free income tax assistance program that is offered in Ellis County from Feb. 4 to April 15. The hours are from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Ennis Public Library in Ennis and from noon-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Nicholas P. Sims Library in Waxahachie.
Eligible returns will be filed electronically and all AARP Tax-Aide services, including electronic filing, are free of charge.
With the exception of amended returns, all returns are completed with the use of computer software.
Taxpayers do not have to be elderly or members of AARP to use the service.
Taxpayers wishing to use the AARP service should be aware that – and plan accordingly – February is very busy for AARP Tax-Aide volunteers and taxpayers at both sites will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Because of the early rush we see in February, some taxpayers may want to consider coming later in the season to avoid long waits to have their tax return completed,” a spokesman said.
During slower traffic, however, counselors may not be present for the entire posted hours when no taxpayers are present.
The volunteers do not prepare extremely complicated returns, but can assist taxpayers with such returns and give advice about what steps should be taken in order to complete their forms.
Taxpayers seeking assistance should bring with them Social Security cards for all who will appear on the tax return or a copy of their 2006 return which was completed at one of the AARP sites, with all of the names and Social Security numbers and other necessary data shown on that copy.
Taxpayers should also bring all tax-related documents received in the mail or otherwise (W-2s and 1099s) and any documentation showing the original purchase date and price of any/all assets sold in 2007. In addition, those who receive Social Security benefits should bring with them all SSA-1099 forms.
Other documentation a taxpayer should bring is proof that his or her federal income tax is paid as well as all receipts or cancelled checks for figures to be used when itemizing deductions.
Those taxpayers who paid for dependent care during 2007 should bring the name, address and EIN or Social Security number of the dependent care provider(s). Both spouses need to be present to sign Form 8879 when claiming “married filing jointly” status.
If one is incapacitated, that spouse must be available to sign the Form 8879 by the end of that day.
AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are unable to complete returns for taxpayers requiring a full Schedule C instead of a CE and taxpayers with rental income.
