Sheriff’s deputies recently recovered about $50,000 in cash as the result of a traffic stop on Interstate 35.
The incident began with deputies pulling over a southbound Ford pickup near mile marker 396, with the driver subsequently taken into custody.
“The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was arrested for traffic violations,” Capt. Danny Williams said. “While inventorying the vehicle incidental to the arrest, a large amount of cash was found.”
Williams said the money consisted of $5 and $10 bills and was bundled up in tape.
Authorities are alleging the money was the result of criminal activity and are filing confiscation proceedings against it and the vehicle, Williams said, noting a felony money laundering charge was filed against Tiburcio Leija, 33, of Eagle Pass. Leija has since been released on a $25,000 bond.
The investigation has been turned over to the sheriff’s drug task force, Williams said.
