Waxahachie firefighters responding to a possible structure fire Sunday evening found a mattress on fire upon arrival.
Units were dispatched to the 600 block of Main St. at 6:02 p.m.
According to the reports, firefighters found a structure with light brown smoke showing from several open windows upon their arrival. A burning mattress was found in the entryway, about 15 feet from the threshold, with firefighters deploying a hose line through an open door.
A primary search of the structure was conducted and turned up clear. The fire was brought under control and extinguished at 6:10 p.m., with firefighters using a ventilation fan to remove the remaining smoke from the structure, which was not damaged.
No utilities were hooked up to the building at the time of the fire, with the reports indicating the owner was contacted and a walk-through of the structure done before firefighters cleared the scene at 6:41 p.m. An investigation determined a cigarette caused the fire, which was deemed accidental in nature. No injuries were reported from firefighters.
