OVILLA - “Smash-and-grab” type suspects burglarized the Ovilla Market early this morning, with images of the heist captured on surveillance tape.
At least four people were involved in the burglary at the store, which is located at 3321 Ovilla Road.
“They pried the front door open, came in and took the safe from behind the counter,” Police Chief Michael C. Moon said. “They were only in there about 30 seconds.”
Surveillance tape reviewed by police shows four black males wearing shorts and white, baggy T-shirts involved in taking the safe, which was not fastened down. The men also wore gloves and had towels over their heads and were wearing ball caps, Moon said, saying the suspects never looked up where an image of their faces could be captured.
The incident occurred at about 2:13 a.m., according to the surveillance tape. A newspaper carrier discovered the pried-open front door at about 4.
Cash and checks were taken in the heist.
“They knew what they were doing,” Moon said, saying there are no suspects at this time.
Police continue to review the videotape, with the matter remaining under investigation.
