AUSTIN - Texas collected $1.85 billion in sales tax in August, up 12.7 percent compared to a year ago, state Comptroller Susan Combs announced this week.

ďWhen the stateís 2007 fiscal year ended Aug. 31, sales tax collections totaled $20.1 billion, 10.9 percent higher than in fiscal 2006,Ē Combs said.

Combs distributed $447.3 million in September sales tax payments to local governments, a 10.4 percent increase compared to September 2006.

So far this calendar year, local sales tax allocations are up 7 percent compared to the same period in 2006.

Combs sent September sales tax allocations of $302.9 million to Texas cities, up 9.1 percent compared to September 2006. Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax revenues are running 7.1 percent higher than last year.

Texas counties received September sales tax allocations of $27.3 million, up 12.1 percent compared to a year ago. Calendar year-to-date, county sales tax allocations are 8.2 percent higher than last year.

As a whole, Ellis County received $1,438,985.71. Year to date, the countyís cities have received $14,558,655.33.

The city of Waxahachie received $725,699.92, an increase of 2.24 percent over last Septemberís $709,756.11. Year to date, the city has received $7,289,428.95, an increase of 3.41 percent over its 2006 total of $7,048,840.45.

The city of Ennis received $279,304.42, a 3.77 percent decrease from last Septemberís $290,275.88. Year to date, Ennis has received $2,951,486.06, a 5.04 percent increase over its 2006 total of $2,809,616.51.

The city of Midlothian received $254,744.12, a 19.52 percent increase over last Septemberís $213,131.29. Year to date, Midlothian has received $2,481,127.15, an 11.22 percent increase over its 2006 total of $2,230,760.96.

The city of Red Oak received $122,926.43, a 4.79 percent decrease over last Septemberís $129,114.75. Year to date, Red Oak has received $1,217,010.75, a 1.18 percent decrease from its 2006 total of $1,231,603.25.

The 122 special purpose taxing districts around the state received $15.1 million in sales tax revenue, an increase of 34 percent compared to a year ago. So far this calendar year, sales tax allocations to special purpose districts are up 17.7 percent compared to 2006.

Ten Texas transit systems received $101.9 million in September sales tax payments, up 10.7 percent compared to a year ago. Year-to-date, transit sales tax revenues are up 4.9 percent.

Septemberís sales tax allocations include local sales taxes collected in July and reported to the Comptroller in August.
