The Red Oak ISD board of trustees met Monday, with various recognitions extended.
Andrea Brown, who teaches early childhood development classes at Red Oak Elementary, was presented with a recognition award from Region 10 by Cindy Daniels.
A banner was presented to Sharon Graves, principal of the school, stating that Red Oak Elementary School is “Texas School Ready Certified.”
Kim Pevehouse of Eastridge Elementary School was recognized as the Superintendent’s Teacher of the Month, and Mary Hanly, a clerk at Red Oak Junior High School, was recognized as the Superintendent’s Support Staff Employee of the Month.
Superintendent Scott Niven reported that there will be a redistricting attendance zones-schedule workshop at 7 p.m. Monday at the administration building.
Russ Schupmann, assistant superintendent of school improvement and campus operations, reported that letters will go out to students who are interdistrict transfers, giving them until April 10 to respond to ensure they are still qualified to be in the school district. Letters also will go to new students requesting interdistrict transfers.
John Humphrey, assistant superintendent of business and support services, gave an update on construction projects for the new Shields Elementary and Red Oak High schools, reporting everything is going smoothly.
“There has really been a lot of work done since the last time we met,” he said.
Board member Lynne Grandstaff asked how the construction is budget wise. Humphrey said it is on target and said he will include a report on expenses at the next meeting.
Humphrey also reported on an upcoming ribbon-cutting event at the new high school athletic complex that will feature hot dogs and a first softball pitch. Buddy Groom, Red Oak resident and professional baseball player, will do the first pitch in baseball followed by a ceremony at the tennis courts.
Humphrey reported on the column signing at the new Shields Elementary and showed a short video of the event.
Under open forum, Carol Richmeyer, a mother with two children in the district, spoke of her dissatisfaction, saying she has tried unsuccessfully to set up a parent teacher conference.
After following protocol steps, she presented her complaints to the school board. Niven instructed the high school principal and Schupmann to set up a meeting with the parent.
Niven reported that all board members completed their required hours of continuing education, with some of them exceeding the number.
The board unanimously approved a charter school statement of impact for Harmony Science Academy and Life School, which will hold classes at the SkillsNET building for awhile. Niven expressed his concern that the schools may affect ROISD’s average daily attendance.
Dr. Brenda Flowers received the board’s unanimous approval for new classes at the high school and junior high school.
The board also voted unanimously to call for a board of trustees election after an overview was presented by Lisa Marquez, who also received approval of a joint election agreement, noting that the district will join the city of Oak Leaf during the election.
Niven gave an update on strategic planning and said administrators have been to four campuses. He invited input from the public and said the information is on the district Web site.
Board president John Hawkins thanked administrators for their hard work.
“I am proud to serve with individuals who take their positions seriously,” he said.
Numerous reports, including athletic, enrollment, financial, food service, campus, no pass/no play, DAEP/PASS and truancy, were on the agenda with no one from the public speaking.
“We have some issues such as failure rates that we are trying to improve,” Niven said.
Hawkins reported on the swim team’s success after only being in existence for three years. He said the swimmers won district and noted Hunter Gnoza was named male swimmer of the year and would compete in the state meet. Maddie Hooper was named female swimmer of the year and Gretchen Gnoza was named coach of the year, he said.
The meeting was adjourned and the board met in closed session to discuss personnel recommendations and administrator contracts.
