Ellis County sheriff’s investigators are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday morning at the southbound Interstate 35 rest area near Forreston.
Jason Bishop, 35, of Missouri has been charged with murder relating to the incident. He remains in custody at Wayne McCollum Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
Department of Public Safety trooper Tom Prudom, who was on a traffic stop nearby when the shooting occurred at about 12:30 a.m., was alerted by a bystander about the incident and responded to the scene.
“The trooper ran over to where the incident occurred,” sheriff’s Capt. Danny Williams said. “After being ID’d by witnesses, trooper Prudom detained the suspect until our arrival, taking him into custody without incident.”
A 57-year-old male victim, who had been shot several times, was located on the ground near the pickup the two men had been traveling in, Williams said.
The victim was transported to Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie, where he was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Linda Sibley. The identification of the victim, who also is from Missouri, has not been released pending notification of relatives.
“We are still gathering statements and information from witnesses. This is an ongoing investigation,” Williams said, noting a handgun was recovered.
The two men are believed to have been traveling together to a destination in South Texas, Williams said, saying, “For some unknown reason, they got into an argument. According to witnesses, the suspect then shot the victim several times.”
