Quilts covered the Midlothian Conference Center over the weekend as the 8th Annual Ellis County Quilt Show got underway.

Hosted by the Creative Quilters Guild of Ellis County, the event say 129 quilts displayed with 122 judged in a variety of categories.

“We are pleased with the turnout and this has been a good show,” said Deborah Brizendine, quilt show chairman. “A lot of people have worked very hard on this event and it shows.”

Gail Bumpus, took Best of Show, with her quilt, Beyond Color Purple.

“I’ve only been quilting about six years and I am so proud the judges chose my quilt,” said Bumpus. “I teach quilting and used this pattern as a ‘Block Of The Month.’”

“There are 16 blocks and each block took me about 8 to 10 hours,” she added. “But overall I spent more than a year putting this quilt together and getting it just right.”

Worked in a deep red, Bumpus said she loves bright colors and detailed work.

“I was proud of this quilt and hoped it would earn a ribbon,” said Bumpus. “There are some very, very nice quilts here and I am so proud to have won Best Of Show.”

Brizendine said more than 400 people viewed the show on Friday and she expected the weekend total to top 1,000.

“It’s been steady and people seemed impressed by the quality of quilting and everything else we have out here,” said Brizendine. “You want a show that is unique and offers something a little different.”

The quilt show also saw 22 vendors offering everything from ribbons and cloth to scissors and quilt patterns.

“We do all this with volunteer work and I’m very proud of our people,” said Brizendine. “And as soon as we get finished with this show we will start planning next year’s event.”
