Waxahachie police took two Midlothian men into custody Saturday after responding to a fight in progress call from a restaurant on the downtown square.
The incident occurred at 11:23 p.m. in the 200 block of S. Rogers St., with several officers responding to the scene to find the parties in question already had separated.
“Officer Richard Powell was questioning a male at the bar who was believed to have been involved in the original disturbance,” investigator Sgt. Todd Woodruff said. “Officer Powell reports the man suddenly began throwing punches at him, striking him in the head and face.
“The officer was able to overpower the suspect and gain some control of him,” Woodruff said, noting several officers who had been questioning other people outside of the restaurant went inside to assist Powell.
“The man continued to struggle with the officers, but was eventually handcuffed and removed from the restaurant,” Woodruff said, noting Powell suffered several minor injuries.
Brandy Franklin Cornett, 34, of Midlothian, was taken into custody on charges of assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest, Woodruff said, noting another man believed to have been involved in the original disturbance, Wallace Ray Light, 34, of Midlothian, was arrested and charged with public intoxication. Bond amounts were not immediately available.
