NEW YORK (AP) -A judge has ruled that it is OK for America's cup boats to use engines to trim sails and move water ballast.

The ruling Thursday is a victory for two-time defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland in its bitter dispute with American challenger BMW Oracle Racing, who will meet in a best-of-3 showdown in February in giant multihulls.

Justice Shirley Kornreich of New York State Supreme Court also scheduled a hearing for Aug. 10 to discuss Alinghi's demand that BMW Oracle Racing turn over a measurement certificate for its 90-foot trimaran.

This recent round of court action began after Alinghi placed an engine on its 90-foot catamaran for trimming sails and moving water ballast from one hull to another.
