Monday signaled the end of the summer and a return to the classroom for students in Waxahachie. With classes back in session, drivers need to be aware that school zones are again in effect.

On Thursday and Friday, members of the Waxahachie Fire Department will be at Dunaway, Northside, Felty, Shackleford, Marvin and Wedgeworth elementaries to promote awareness of the zones.

Firefighters, along with their different emergency vehicles, will be at the different zones from 2:45-3:15 p.m.

“We want to draw attention to the school zones, but we didn’t do it on the first day of school because of the all confusion and the ‘busy-ness’ that happens that day,” Waxahachie Fire Chief David Hudgins said.

“Now that the stress has subsided, it is time to remind motorists about school being in session,” he said, noting there could be some confusion about when school starts for residents who grew up when school started after the Labor Day weekend.

“The main thing is to slow down and be observant of pedestrians in the area,” he said. “By being out there, if we are able to persuade one driver to slow down and not hit someone then we have been successful.”
