MIDLOTHIAN – Authorities have identified the man who was shot by police during an incident Thursday afternoon in the 400 block of Brandi Ridge Drive as Dane Smith, 45, of Midlothian.

Smith was transported from the scene at about 4 p.m. by air ambulance to an undisclosed hospital, where he passed away, according to the reports.

In a press release issued Thursday evening by the Midlothian Police Department, public information officer Karyn McCoy said that agency sent officers to the scene after receiving a 911 call from a resident at about 12:33 p.m.

“The caller reported that he heard two loud crashes and advised dispatch that the subject had backed a vehicle into his own house and was yelling at the caller,” McCoy said, saying officers attempted to make contact with Smith by knocking on the door.

“The male subject refused to exit and made threats against officers,” she said. “The incident culminated and resulted in a shooting.”

Due to there being an officer-involved shooting, the Texas Rangers will handle the investigation of the incident.
