The community is being asked to help provide foster children a brighter holiday by participating in the Spirit of Christmas program.

Spirit of Christmas is sponsored by the Ellis County Child Welfare Board, which oversees children placed in foster care through Child Protective Services.

“We have about 100 children in care at this time,” board member Sylvia Smith said. “Each tag on one of our trees has a child’s name and a gift idea for a toy or a piece of clothing, with each child having multiple tags.”

The program has drawn generous support from the community in the past, with Smith expressing the board’s appreciation for all donations given to help children in the state’s care during the holiday season.

“We have various organizations who help us each year and we also have donation envelopes at the trees. We use those funds to help fill in any gaps after we collect the gifts,” Smith added.

The process is simple: Pick up a tag from one of the trees and return the tag with the gift to the tree after the item is purchased. Board members will pick up the gifts Dec. 18 from all of the trees, with CPS caseworkers handling the distribution to the children.
