The Texas Department of Transportation will close northbound and southbound Interstate 35E at U.S. Highway 77 in Red Oak tonight, beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, to 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.
This closure is necessary to allow for the demolition of the old Highway 77 underpass structure. The frontage roads for I-35E, however, will remain open.
Demolition of this old bridge is now possible following the opening of a new underpass directly to the north of this structure on Aug. 25.
“The new bridge for U.S. 77 was built as part of TxDOT’s I-35E improvement project,” said Bill Pierce, P.E., TxDOT’s Ellis County area engineer. “It aligns with the city of Red Oak’s planned arterial roadway to the west and should also improve the intersection layout and operation where U.S. 77 meets I-35E, just north of Waxahachie.”
Message boards announcing the roadway closure have been placed in both directions along I-35E in Dallas and Ellis counties to notify the public of the scheduled closures. Law enforcement will be present to provide traffic control.
Construction of the $61.5 million TxDOT project in Red Oak to reconstruct I-35E and add two main lanes from Parkerville Road to Highway 77 is being performed by Ed Bell Construction Company of Dallas.
The work will take place weather permitting.
