ITALY – A loose horse on the interstate caused a three-vehicle accident Sunday.

The accident occurred at about mile marker 386 in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35E, near the Derrs Chapel road exit.

Emergency responders from the Italy police and fire departments were dispatched to the scene at 9:23 p.m.

“We are not sure at this time how the animal got onto the roadway and that is still under investigation. No one was injured or transported from the scene and no citations were issued,” Italy Police Chief C.V. Johns said.

The first vehicle to strike the horse was a Dodge Neon driven by a Midlothian resident. The resulting collision totaled the car and killed the horse.

A Subaru Legacy then struck the remains, with the vehicle suffering moderate damage. A third vehicle to strike the remains, a tractor-trailer, received minor damage.

No injuries were reported by any of the vehicle occupants.

Officials cleared the scene at 11:10 p.m.
