Out of the top 14 grand champion and reserve champion winners at the 19th annual Ellis County Expo, six were from Midlothian, while two were from Waxahachie, two from Ennis and two from Italy.

The annual event featuring 4-H and FFA projects from across the county wrapped up a week’s worth of showing and activities Saturday afternoon with a barbecue lunch and animal sale.

Reagan Luedtke of Midlothian received $13,000 for her grand champion steer with Byrum Ranch placing the winning bid, while Jaclynn Lewis’ grand champion market lamb brought $3,700 with a top bid by George Luedtke.

Among the other successful bidders was HBI General Contractors, which took the grand champion market hog belonging to Ariel Burden of Ennis with a winning bid of $10,000.

“I think it’s awesome what they’re doing,” said Waxahachie resident Paula Andrle of the auction. Andrle was present at the expo to support her grandson, Will Arnold. She said she was impressed with the amount of money raised through the livestock auction.

“The support that the businesses and different organizations are giving to the kids out here today is great,” she said.

Waxahachie High School ag teacher, Mike Morgan, also expressed thanks for those who participated in the auction.

“We’re so appreciative of our local people,” said Morgan, who pointed out that even with the downturn in the economy, the community still came out in great numbers to participate in the event.

“People continue to support our program and the youth of our county. That’s what makes this the great county that it is,” Morgan said.
