More than 300 members of the extended Carter family held their first reunion at the Woman’s Building on Jefferson Street this weekend.
Family members traveled from as far away as Corpus Christi, Cypress and Houston and as near as Waxahachie, Red Oak and the Dallas area, according to Curtis Mitchell of Red Oak, who planned and coordinated the event.
“This is actually the initial reunion,” Mitchell said. “We are doing this for the elderly family members. After all, if it weren’t for them we wouldn’t be here today.
“Also, we want to make sure all our children have an opportunity to know one another,” Mitchell said.
The schedule of events included a fish fry Friday and barbecue dinner Saturday. The children played in air cages and other playground equipment while the older family members enjoyed dominoes and catching up on the news and old memories.
The group also had scheduled a visit to Mount Lebanon Baptist Church for Sunday morning worship.
Longtime Waxahachie resident and retired elementary school teacher, Bobbie Wigfall, was recognized as the oldest family member in attendance.
