Weather Highlights

Who Left the Water Running?

As you well know, there has been no shortage of rainfall lately. We’ve had a wet spring and a wet start to summer. In fact, at this time of year in 2005, I wrote an article entitled “Who Turned OFF The Water”? We were in a drought that continued well into 2006. Two years later, we can safely say the drought has ended in 2007.

January through June 2005, I recorded a dry 14.53 inches of rain, and, for the entire year of 2005, only 25.16 inches was recorded. The normal rainfall January through June is 21.72 inches. January through June 2006 was better with 19.32 inches, but still below normal. For the entire year of 2006, I recorded 38.51 inches. In contrast, January through June 24, 2007, I have already recorded 3.50 inches with 15.74 inches of that falling in May and so far through June 24 combined, and let’s don’t forget that I recorded 10.27 inches in March. So, that means that only 6.49 inches fell in January, February and April combined. The normal rainfall for an entire year is 36 to 40 inches.

The most rainfall that I have recorded January through June during the last 33 years, occurred in 1990 when I recorded 36.65 inches. In case you are wondering, I recorded a total of 48.63 inches that year. Only 11.98 inches fell the last six months of 1990.

The least rainfall that I have recorded January through June during the last 33 years, occurred in 1990 when I recorded 36.65 inches. In case you are wondering, I recorded a total of 48.63 inches that year. Only 11.98 inches fell the last six months of 1990.

The least rainfall I have recorded January through June in the last 33 years is only 9.17 inches in 1996. The total rainfall that I recorded the second six months of 1996 was 28.99 inches for a total of 38.16 inches in 1996.

The driest year that I have recorded is 1980 with only 24.83 inches, and during the first six months of 1980, I recorded 15.97 inches, but, only 8.86 inches fell the last six months of 1980.

The wettest year that I have recorded is 2001 with 54.52 recorded 25.94 inches. A total of 28.58 inches fell the last six months of that wet year. At least it was evenly distributed the first and last six months of a very wet year.

Now, that I have you totally confused, and after recording 32.50 inches of rain January through June 24, 2007, can you tell about how much rainfall we will end up with at the end of 2007? Me either! Oh, and by the way, some people have been praying for rain the past two years during the drought. I think we can mark rain off the prayer list, at least for awhile.
