Waxahachie police are awaiting a report from the Dallas County medical examiner’s office relating to the death of a 3-year-old Mariah Sanchez of Waxahachie.

“We’re waiting on a (medical examiner’s) report,” investigating detective Sgt. Todd Woodruff said in an interview late Tuesday afternoon. “She was found at the bottom of the hot tub at Blue Lake Villa apartments. We estimate she had been under water for several minutes.

“It appears to be a drowning at this point, but until we get the report, we can’t say for sure,” Woodruff said.

The incident occurred at about 8:40 p.m. Sunday, with Woodruff saying the child and her mother were visiting some friends who lived at the apartments.

“They had gathered at the swimming pool,” he said, noting the child had been swimming that day. “There were other people besides her family and friends there when (the accident) occurred. We’re still talking to witnesses to try and get a better picture of what happened. At this point, no one saw her go under.”

Woodruff said the hot tub is located adjacent to the apartment’s pool, with both in the same fenced-in area behind the complex’ office.

Because a child death is involved with the situation, Child Protective Services also is conducting an investigation.
