The Ellis County Commissioners Court honored the Red Oak and Ferris fire departments with a proclamation at its meeting Tuesday night.

The proclamation recognized the assistance the two departments provided in fighting wildfires in Jack County on Easter weekend. On hand to accept the proclamation was Chief Eric Thompson of the Red Oak Fire Department.

“It was an experience that I will probably never forget and hopefully we will never face that around our county. However, it is nice to know that we have people in other counties that are willing to help us,” Thompson said.

“That is what it is really all about, looking out for each other. This is what we do is help each other and we want thank you for this recognition,” he said.

Inmate charges

In other business, commissioners approved charging inmates for medical services at the jail.

They also approved an insurance policy for the sheriff’s office to operate an RANS S-6 fixed wing aircraft. The policy cost would not exceed $3,600 and would provide $1 million in coverage.

No action was taken to allow the county judge to sign a road repair agreement with Wilbro Construction Pipeline.

Pct. 4 Commissioner Ron Brown drew three names for public members to serve on the elected officials salary grievance committee for 2009. The names were compiled from the jury list from the county and district clerk’s offices. The names of three alternates also were drawn. From those selected, a final list will be presented at a later meeting for approval.

County engineer Joe White presented a proposal to conduct a comprehensive in-house assessment of all Ellis County roads, saying the assessment will include roadway structure and properties, cross-sectional geometry, right-of-way, drainage, drainage structures, vehicle counts and signage. Tools such as global positioning systems, geographic information system mapping, traffic monitoring, photography, surveying and materials identification will be used to complete the assessment, he said.

The commissioners took no action, asking White to come back with a list of the costs involved so they can make a better-informed decision.

The commissioners also:

• approved the purchase of uniforms for the sheriff’s office.

• approved a 2009-2010 contract for limestone flexbase.

• declared outdated law books from the law library as surplus and authorized their disposal at auction.

• approved an amendment to the tax abatement for Austin Bridge.
