NAACP to meet

The Waxahachie Chapter of the NAACP will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 at the Graham Street Church of Christ, 304 Graham St.

This is a one-time change of venue for the regular chapter meeting as the organization will also hold a public discussion on laying the ground work for East Side improvements.

Donations are being sought to assist with May 19 commencement exercises for homeschool graduating seniors of Hillside Christian Academy, 106 N. Hillside in Red Oak.

Caribbean cruise

Reservations are being taken for a February 2008 Caribbean cruise to benefit the Gingerbread House children’s advocacy center. The cruise is sponsored by Blue Knights XXI, a law enforcement motorcycle club. The seven-day trip from Galveston will include stops in Montego Bay, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. The community is invited to participate.

Maypearl roundup

Parents who were unable to attend the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten roundup for Lorene Smith Kirkpatrick Elementary School in Maypearl should call (972) 435-1010 and schedule an appointment prior to the end of the school year.

Pre-kindergarten students must be 4 years of age on or before Sept. 1 and qualify in one of the following areas: eligible for the free or reduced lunch program based on proof of income, live in a home where English is the second language spoken, determined other health-impaired, live with a foster family or with a parent serving in the military. Only a 4-year-old program will be offered and will be full day. Transportation will not be provided. Kindergarten, students must be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1.

“Please be reminded that while neither program is mandatory, once a student is enrolled he or she is subject to attendance guidelines as outlined by state compulsory attendance regulations,” a spokesman said.

The following information will be required at the time of enrollment: proof of residency in the form of a utility bill with name and physical address, state-certified birth certificate, Social Security card, current immunization and a copy of parent driver license.

Parents may or may not have students accompany them to roundup.

Senior center dance

Dave Eder and the Final Showdown Band will be the featured entertainment at a dance sponsored by the Waxahachie Senior Citizens Center from 7-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the center, 219 Patrick St. Admission is $4; there will be a break for refreshments.

TAGG to meet tonight

Taxpayers Alliance for Good Government will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the Waxahachie Civic Center. Discussions will include the county’s $54 million bond proposal. Speakers include Peggy Venable with Americans for Prosperity and Fort Worth council member Clyde Picht.

Beaded Candleholders

Nicholas P. Sims Library teens, ages 13-18, will create beaded candleholders from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, May 9. Bring a friend; snacks provided.

The Ellis County Relay for Life will hold its team captain meeting on Thursday, May 10, in the Red Oak Municipal Building, 200 Lakeview Parkway, Red Oak. Captains may register, make changes or turn in donations from 6:30-7 p.m. The general meeting will begin at 7.

Ellis County Republicans to meet

The Ellis County Republicans executive committee meeting is from 7-9 p.m. May 10 at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce with Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams as featured speaker.

Williams will discuss pending legislation and upcoming election law changes that will affect Texas in next year’s elections.

Immunization clinic

The Baylor Immunization Clinic will be in the Marvin Elementary School cafeteria from 4:30-6 p.m. May 10. This is a free immunization clinic. Parents must bring their student’s immunization record with them.

Bond proposal

Friends of Ellis County PAC will present information on the county bond proposal at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, to the Waxahachie Rotary Club at the Waxahachie Civic Center. The public is invited.

Talent show

The Waxahachie High School talent show will be held from 7-10:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, in the Fine Arts Center. Tickets to the show will cost $3 and will be available at the door.

The Ellis County Relay for Life is sponsoring a fund-raiser with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

First prize is a $300 Visa gift card. Second prize includes four Texas Ranger baseball tickets with a parking pass. Third prize includes two Stars hockey tickets with a parking pass. Fourth, fifth and sixth prizes include a $100 gift card from Lowes, a $100 gift card from Belk’s and five hours of free limousine service donated by A Luxury Limo 4 U. Seventh prize is an appliance basket from HEB which includes a toaster, coffee maker, blender, coffee grinder and slow cooker. Eighth prize is an entertainment basket from Hastings. Pancake breakfast fly-in

The annual Mid-Way Regional Airport pancake breakfast fly-in will be held from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, June 2. Breakfast tickets are $5 and children younger than age 8 are free with each paying adult. Admission and parking are free.

The event will feature classic airplanes and fighters, plane rides/discovery flights, remote control model flyers, the Classic Swing Band, Midlothian Classic Wheels and other attractions.

Paint Historic Waxahachie

Paint Historic Waxahachie will be held Saturday, June 2, around the courthouse square in coordination with the Gingerbread Trail Tour of Homes. Paint Historic Waxahachie is an activity of the Ellis County Art Association. The event is free and spectators are welcome to observe and interact with the artists. A 90-minute “quick draw” competition will be held from 8:30-10 a.m. The artwork produced during the competition will be sold at the live auction at the courthouse immediately after. Proceeds will benefit the Ellis County Art Museum.
