Countdown to Christmas photos

Christmas past photographs will return to the Daily Light beginning Friday, Nov. 23. Photographs of children celebrating Christmas in past years may be submitted to amy.burk@thedailylight.com or brought into the newspaper office, 200 W. Marvin St., Waxahachie. Ask for Amy Burk. Include the names and ages of the children in the photograph and the year the photograph was taken. Veterans ceremony

Shackelford Elementary will hold its annual veterans ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the school gymnasium. The public is invited to attend.

Look Good Feel Better

The American Cancer Society will sponsor a Look Good Feel Better event for women at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at Midlothian Health Center. The event will include a complimentary makeup kit, wigs, hats and scarves.

Flower power pens

Nicholas P. Sims Library teens, ages 13-18, are making flower power pens from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14. Snacks will be provided.

Teen book club

Nicholas P. Sims Library Teen Book Club will meet from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, to discuss “New Moon” from the Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer.

“Come join us as we talk about this great book,” a spokesman said.

Master Gardener training

Applications are now available for the 2008 Master Gardener Training program. Texas Master Gardeners are trained members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens.

The time commitment is from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of February. Trainees also will be asked to complete 75 hours of volunteer service before graduating from the Master Gardener program.

Class size is limited and attendance is required at all sessions to complete the program. Deadline for application is Jan. 11.

Pancake breakfast

The Waxahachie Senior Citizens Center will hold a pancake breakfast from 7-10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The cost of the pancake breakfast is $4 for adults and $3 for children and includes eggs, bacon, juice, milk and coffee.

The center is located at 219 Patrick St.

Children’s Book Week event

Nicholas P. Sims Library children’s department invites ages 3-10 to the Children’s Book Week party from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

“We will share information on book awards and our favorite books,” a spokesman said. “Children will design and make their own bookmarks.” Admission is free.

Lusk fund-raiser

A barbecue dinner and auction fund-raiser for the family of 4-year-old Donovan Lusk of Italy, who has Batten disease, is set for 5 p.m. Nov. 17 at Sokol Activity Center in Ennis. Proceeds will go toward medical bills.

Teen Movie Saturday

Teen Movie Saturday at Nicholas P. Sims Library is from 2:30-4:50 p.m. Nov. 24. This month’s feature stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. In this third installment of the Spider-Man trilogy, Peter Parker has managed to strike a balance between his devotion to M.J. and his duties as a superhero. When his suit suddenly turns black and enhances his power, it brings out a vengeful side that he must struggle to control while battling two of the most feared villains yet, Sandman and Venom. This movie is rated PG-13.

“Enjoy popcorn and a movie on the big screen,” a spokesman said. “As with all library programs, this movie is free of charge.”

Vendors, entertainers, sponsors needed

The Waxahachie Downtown Merchants Association will host its second annual Downtown Victorian Christmas Festival this year Nov. 23-25, Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 8-9 around the historic courthouse square.

The association is looking for Victorian-themed vendors, entertainers and sponsors that are interested in being a part of this holiday family favorite event.

Friends of Sims Library

The Friends of Sims Library service organization will meet at 10 a.m. in the library meeting room on Nov. 26. Candlelight vigil

MADD Waxahachie will hold a candlelight vigil of remembrance and hope for family members, friends and loved ones who have been killed or injured by drunk or impaired drivers from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Rogers Hotel, 103 E. Main St., Waxahachie.

Blood drive

Oversight committee

The Ellis County Bond Oversight Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7 in the second floor courtroom of the Ellis County Courthouse. The committee reviews progress on the county’s facilities projects, including the courts and administration building and the jail addition.
